NetEase’s Lost Light is an action-survival game, soft launched into open beta in November of 2021 for the US. While the game bears a striking resemblance to several popular titles of late (PUBG, Escape from Tarkov, and The Division come to mind), it remains a surprisingly polished and complex gameplay experience. Impressive visuals, consistently smooth gameplay and a deep weapon customization system managed to keep me hooked – despite an otherwise generic aesthetic. But how long can that last?
Get your guns ready and shoot your enemies with accuracy. Train your shooting skills through PvE mode to cut your time aiming at your enemies in PvP battles and hit your targets accurately. Using assault rifles, sniper rifles, SMGs, and DMRs from your weapon pack, you can fire at will and eliminate enemies in seconds. Lead your Fireflies armband, explore three available maps, loot your opposing squads and safely get back.
Things like the gun customization and the health system are pretty similar to Escape from Tarkov alongside the maps (one of which feels like an exact copy but more on that later). The game takes the basic ideas of every action shooter game out there but adds more complex mechanics. The inventory system, health system, and crafting system add a lot to the game.
While the gameplay is mechanically sound, the sound is… not. There is the occasional audio issue, but it is not so glaring or common as to ruin the experience. Between games, you have access to The Shelter. Here, you can manage your inventory, access the shops, claim rewards, outfit your Firefly and interact with what is arguably the game’s most detailed and enticing mechanic – weapon customization.
Lost Light offers players options to choose whether befriend their enemy or shoot him on sight. Sometimes it's a good idea to convert enemies into friends. It's not worth teaming up with a rookie, but if you catch an experienced shooter, you should consider it carefully before the execution. A veteran may play a key role in future combat.
Lost Light is certainly way better than a bunch of the games Netease has worked on in the past. In terms of things like graphics and gameplay, it’s not too different from Badlanders or Life After but playing through, you’d find the game to be a bit more polished and cleaner looking with way fewer bugs. The biggest complaint we had with this was the lack of an FPP mode.
Lost Light enables its mobile and PC players to party up and destroy their enemies together. With the in-game voice chat system, players can establish communication at the first moment and keep the connection with no break-off during game time.
